    Pilot-Based TI-ADC Mismatch Error Calibration for IR-UWB Receivers

    In this work, we rst provide an overviewof the state of the art in mismatch error estimation and correction for time-interleaved analog to digital converters (TI-ADCs). Then, we present a novel pilot-based on-line adaptive timing mismatch error estimation approach for TI-ADCs in the context of an impulse radio ultra wideband (IR-UWB) receiver with correlation-based detection. We introduce the developed method and derive the expressions for both additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) and Rayleigh multipath fading (RMPF) channels. We also derive a lower bound on the required ADC resolution to attain a certainestimation precision. Simulations show the effectiveness of the technique when combined with an adequate compensator. We analyze the estimation error behavior as a function of signal to noise ratio (SNR) and investigate the ADC performance before and after compensation. While all mismatches combined cause the effective number of bits (ENOB) to drop to 3 bits and to 6 bits when considering only timing mismatch, estimation and correction of these errors with the proposed technique can restore a close to ideal behavior.We also show the performance loss at the receiver in terms of bit error rate (BER) and how compensation is able to signicantly improve performance.Fil: Schmidt, Christian Andrés.     Gracias a su alta calidad y perfil aromático, el cacao de Colombia, Ecuador y Perú es altamente valorado en el mercado global. Sin embargo, bajo la amenaza del cambio climático, la productividad y calidad de la producción está en riesgo. Los países y sus regiones cacaoteras respectivas serán afectados de distintas maneras, pero en todos será necesario la modificación de las prácticas actualmente usadas y en parte también la adaptación de nuevas prácticas. El presente análisis forma parte del proyecto Clima- LoCa. Dentro de este marco, se propone no solamente identificar la situación climática futura que tienen que enfrentar estos tres países cacaoteros, sino también prácticas de adaptación y caminos hacia la implementación de estas prácticas.     Neutrophil “plucking” on megakaryocytes drives platelet production and boosts cardiovascular disease

    Intravascular neutrophils and platelets collaborate in maintaining host integrity, but their interaction can also trigger thrombotic complications. We report here that cooperation between neutrophil and platelet lineages extends to the earliest stages of platelet formation by megakaryocytes in the bone marrow. Using intravital microscopy, we show that neutrophils "plucked" intravascular megakaryocyte extensions, termed proplatelets, to control platelet production. Following CXCR4-CXCL12-dependent migration towards perisinusoidal megakaryocytes, plucking neutrophils actively pulled on proplatelets and triggered myosin light chain and extracellular-signal-regulated kinase activation through reactive oxygen species. By these mechanisms, neutrophils accelerate proplatelet growth and facilitate continuous release of platelets in steady state. Following myocardial infarction, plucking neutrophils drove excessive release of young, reticulated platelets and boosted the risk of recurrent ischemia. Ablation of neutrophil plucking normalized thrombopoiesis and reduced recurrent thrombosis after myocardial infarction and thrombus burden in venous thrombosis. Little is known about their diversity and distribution at large spatial scales, despite the availability of considerable amounts of local-scale data. Earthworm diversity data, obtained from the primary literature or provided directly by authors, were collated with information on site locations, including coordinates, habitat cover, and soil properties. Datasets were required, at a minimum, to include abundance or biomass of earthworms at a site. Where possible, site-level species lists were included, as well as the abundance and biomass of individual species and ecological groups. This global dataset contains 10,840 sites, with 184 species, from 60 countries and all continents except Antarctica. The data were obtained from 182 published articles, published between 1973 and 2017, and 17 unpublished datasets. Amalgamating data into a single global database will assist researchers in investigating and answering a wide variety of pressing questions, for example, jointly assessing aboveground and belowground biodiversity distributions and drivers of biodiversity change.Peer reviewe

    Risk portfolio on modern finance has become increasingly technical, requiring the use of sophisticated mathematical tools in both research and practice. Since companies cannot insure themselves completely against risk, as human incompetence in predicting the future precisely that written in Al-Quran surah Luqman verse 34, they have to manage it to yield an optimal portfolio. The objective here is to minimize the variance among all portfolios, or alternatively, to maximize expected return among all portfolios that has at least a certain expected return. Furthermore, this study focuses on optimizing risk portfolio so called Markowitz MVO (Mean-Variance Optimization). Some theoretical frameworks for analysis are arithmetic mean, geometric mean, variance, covariance, linear programming, and quadratic programming. Moreover, finding a minimum variance portfolio produces a convex quadratic programming, that is minimizing the objective function ðð¥with constraintsð ð 𥠥 ðandð´ð¥ = ð. The outcome of this research is the solution of optimal risk portofolio in some investments that could be finished smoothly using MATLAB R2007b software together with its graphic analysis

    An original phylogenetic approach identified mitochondrial haplogroup T1a1 as inversely associated with breast cancer risk in BRCA2 mutation carriers

    Introduction: Individuals carrying pathogenic mutations in the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes have a high lifetime risk of breast cancer. BRCA1 and BRCA2 are involved in DNA double-strand break repair, DNA alterations that can be caused by exposure to reactive oxygen species, a main source of which are mitochondria. Mitochondrial genome variations affect electron transport chain efficiency and reactive oxygen species production. Individuals with different mitochondrial haplogroups differ in their metabolism and sensitivity to oxidative stress. Variability in mitochondrial genetic background can alter reactive oxygen species production, leading to cancer risk. In the present study, we tested the hypothesis that mitochondrial haplogroups modify breast cancer risk in BRCA1/2 mutation carriers. Methods: We genotyped 22,214 (11,421 affected, 10,793 unaffected) mutation carriers belonging to the Consortium of Investigators of Modifiers of BRCA1/2 for 129 mitochondrial polymorphisms using the iCOGS array. Haplogroup inference and association detection were performed using a phylogenetic approach. ALTree was applied to explore the reference mitochondrial evolutionary tree and detect subclades enriched in affected or unaffected individuals. Results: We discovered that subclade T1a1 was depleted in affected BRCA2 mutation carriers compared with the rest of clade T (hazard ratio (HR) = 0.55; 95% confidence interval (CI), 0.34 to 0.88; P = 0.01). Compared with the most frequent haplogroup in the general population (that is, H and T clades), the T1a1 haplogroup has a HR of 0.62 (95% CI, 0.40 to 0.95; P = 0.03). We also identified three potential susceptibility loci, including G13708A/rs28359178, which has demonstrated an inverse association with familial breast cancer risk. Conclusions: This study illustrates how original approaches such as the phylogeny-based method we used can empower classical molecular epidemiological studies aimed at identifying association or risk modification effects.Peer reviewe

    Differential cross section measurements for the production of a W boson in association with jets in proton–proton collisions at √s = 7 TeV

    Measurements are reported of differential cross sections for the production of a W boson, which decays into a muon and a neutrino, in association with jets, as a function of several variables, including the transverse momenta (pT) and pseudorapidities of the four leading jets, the scalar sum of jet transverse momenta (HT), and the difference in azimuthal angle between the directions of each jet and the muon. The data sample of pp collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV was collected with the CMS detector at the LHC and corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 5.0 fb[superscript −1]. The measured cross sections are compared to predictions from Monte Carlo generators, MadGraph + pythia and sherpa, and to next-to-leading-order calculations from BlackHat + sherpa. The differential cross sections are found to be in agreement with the predictions, apart from the pT distributions of the leading jets at high pT values, the distributions of the HT at high-HT and low jet multiplicity, and the distribution of the difference in azimuthal angle between the leading jet and the muon at low values.United States.
